West & North-West London
External insulation and render, detailed correctly
External wall insulation and through-coloured render on solid-wall properties — warmer house, lower bills, and a facade that is not cracking in two winters.
Solid-walled West London stock loses a great deal of heat through the walls, and external insulation is usually the single most effective fix. The work lives and dies on the details: beads at every opening, correct depth at the base, reveals and sills extended so water throws clear, and the roof verge adjusted for the new wall thickness. Skip those and you get cracking and damp, which is why cheap render jobs fail.
What the work covers
- Substrate survey and preparation
- EPS or mineral wool insulation boards
- Mesh, basecoat and through-coloured topcoat
- Reveals, sills, beads and movement joints
- Extended roof verges and rainwater goods
- Scaffolding included in the quote
What it costs
External wall insulation with render typically runs £120 to £180 per square metre including scaffold, depending on insulation depth, the number of openings and the state of the existing substrate.

External Insulation & Rendering — common questions
Will external insulation stop condensation and damp?
It usually helps a great deal, because it lifts the internal wall surface temperature above the dew point, which is where surface condensation and mould start. It does not fix penetrating or rising damp — those need dealing with first.
Do I need planning permission for external render?
On most houses, cladding or rendering is permitted development, but not in conservation areas, on listed buildings, or where an Article 4 direction applies. We check the property before quoting.
How much will it cut my heating bills?
On an uninsulated solid-wall house it is a substantial reduction, but the honest answer is that it depends on your existing heating, glazing and how you use the house. We will not quote you a percentage we cannot stand behind.
How thick is the insulation?
Commonly 70mm to 100mm. That thickness has to be accounted for at the roof verge, at window reveals and at the damp-proof course, which is exactly the detailing that gets skipped on bad jobs.
